Connecting Greenland to US Investment Opportunities

July 26, 2024
Samuel Associates

Key Achievements Summary

•     Led Pan-Arctic consultations with government, business, academia, and community organizations across Alaska, Northern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and Northern Europe.

•     Facilitated strategic investment and trade policy reform discussions, strengthening ties between the US and Greenland’s local government, business and community decision-makers.

The Arctic holds immense geopolitical and economic significance. However, despite its rich natural resources, vital trade routes, and a strategic position connecting continents, the region faces persisting challenges as regards climate change, infrastructure development, and local economic opportunities.

Recognizing that a thriving Arctic business community is crucial to generating economic growth, our client, a US Government Congress-funded organization, aimed to identify and address gaps in connecting the broader Arctic region to US investment opportunities.

Reengaging US Arctic Business Dialogues

Our client recognized the need for a regional Arctic assessment to determine whether local Arctic business communities saw the creation of a new forum as a suitable way to solve existing trade challenges.

Samuel Associates leveraged its network to meet with key stakeholders in each region, spanning Alaska, Northern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, and Northern Europe to assess local needs.

After conducting consultations and meetings with business, government and community leaders, Samuel Associates travelled to Iceland and Greenland with the client and produced a detailed report with actionable recommendations and a path forward.

Facilitating Trade and Investment in Greenland

During our time on the ground and in the face of heightened Chinese and Russian involvement in the region, our interactions focused primarily on informing US stakeholders on local business, regulatory and policy priorities in Greenland.

Our team collaborated closely with local government, business, and community bodies to forge strategic relationships and establish lasting platforms, paving the way for meaningful business conversations, and advocating for the strengthening of US-Greenland ties to facilitate investment in strategic assets and locally-owned projects.
